Virginia Evans tactfully created a piece that is both linear and requires a bit of puzzle piecing – forcing you to think and reflect, but not in an overwhelming way. Margin Call

Margin Call

J.C. Chandor

“Margin Call offers a sobering depiction of the opening hours of the 2008 financial crisis inside a large investment bank. The film is less about sensationalism than about decision-making under pressure, portraying how complex financial risks can cascade through an organization once they are finally understood. While the characters’ choices reflect the incentives and tensions that existed within parts of the industry at the time, the film ultimately serves as a reminder of the importance of transparency, sound risk management, and ethical leadership in financial institutions. For viewers in the investment world, it stands as a thoughtful cautionary tale about how quickly systemic risk can emerge when accountability and prudence fall short.”

“The Escape Room: A Novel by Megan Goldin is a fast-paced, high-stakes thriller that examines ambition, loyalty, and the hidden costs of corporate success. Set largely within a tense, claustrophobic “team-building” exercise, the story steadily peels back each character’s motivations and ethical compromises. Goldin maintains strong momentum through sharp pacing and escalating revelations, keeping the reader engaged as power dynamics shift. “I have known Dr. Bill Bradley my entire life. For years, he has cared for our family’s horses, and over time I’ve watched his career soar as his practice, New England Equine, set the standard for the industry. So when he casually mentioned a few weeks ago that he had written a book, I was stunned that he’d found the time to put pen to paper. What I assumed the book might be about turned out to be completely wrong—and it made me see this lifelong friend in an entirely new light. The Heart and the Eagle is beautifully written and set in the remote San Luis Valley of southern Colorado. It’s a story of friendship, tragedy, and forgiveness. In the fall of 1963, a hunting accident changed the lives of two families forever, yet what followed—unexpectedly—was compassion. The book blends moments of sublime, even brilliant humor with episodes of stark tragedy. Along the way, it brings to life cowboys and sheepherders, mining towns, horses and mules, and the vast, rugged landscape of the rural American West. The Heart and the Eagle is a masterfully crafted story, rich with life lessons. It reminds us that compassion and forgiveness may well be the two most important qualities a human can possess.”

Freezing Order

Freezing Order

Bill Browder

“Bill Browder’s Freezing Order is a gripping exposé of the staggering corruption at the heart of Vladimir Putin’s regime. Initially a $230 million fraud uncovered by Browder’s lawyer Sergei Magnitsky, who later died in custody, the book reveals how billions have been siphoned from the Russian state and laundered through Western financial systems. Browder exposes a system where police, prosecutors, and judges serve not justice but personal enrichment, with Putin himself likely at the top of the kleptocratic pyramid. The global response is also powerful: the passage of the Magnitsky Act in the U.S., later followed by similar legislation in the U.K. and EU, marks a watershed moment in punishing human-rights abusers and corrupt officials tied to the case. What makes Freezing Order especially urgent is its apparent connection between financial corruption and war. Browder argues that the invasion of Ukraine is not just about power or territory—it’s a calculated distraction from Russia’s economic implosion. With the economy gutted by theft and sustained only through repression, propaganda, and foreign debt, the premise is that war becomes a necessary smokescreen. In this context, Freezing Order is more than a true-crime story; it’s a sobering reflection of how unchecked greed, legal resistance, and geopolitical inaction can fuel global instability.”

The Berry Pickers

Amanda Peters

“Amanda Peters’ debut, The Berry Pickers, is a quietly devastating novel that combines the decades-long grief of a Mi’kmaq family with the dawning self-awareness of a girl raised far from her own history. Set in motion by the 1962 disappearance of four-year-old Ruthie from a Maine blueberry farm, the story unfolds through the alternating voices of Ruthie’s haunted brother Joe and a young woman named Norma whose memories never quite fit the life she leads. Peters’ spare, lyrical prose captures the ache of intergenerational trauma while keeping the narrative propulsive; every chapter peels back another layer of secrets without surrendering the book’s essential tenderness. The result is both a meditation on cultural erasure and a suspenseful search for truth. It is no surprise that the novel earned the 2024 Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction after already securing Barnes & Noble’s Discover Prize—honors that underscore its resonance. The Berry Pickers stands out as an assured, emotionally rich first novel that will reward readers who value character-driven fiction with moral heft.”

John Lewis: Good Trouble

Matt Allen & William Gartner

“My daughter and I recently watched the documentary, John Lewis: Good Trouble, about the legendary civil rights activist John Lewis.  In honor of black history month we are sharing this as our media pick. While the movie clearly has its own political leanings the high level messages of John Lewis are timeless and universal. For example, he is known to have said “do not get lost in a sea of despair.” In a time where division and despair can sometimes feel overwhelming, hearing a civil rights icon urge viewers to stay hopeful and engaged was motivating. The movie doesn’t shy away from the complexities of modern politics, but it consistently underscores that meaningful progress often comes through persistence, dialogue, and legislative efforts along with staying active in one’s community.”

“Billion Dollar Whale is a 2018 book chronicling the story of a massive international fraud led by Jho Low, a Malaysian man who attended college in the United States. It tells the story of a modern-day, 10 year international white-collar crime straight out of Hollywood, with tales of partying on yachts and private jets with actors, models, heads of state and Wall Street banking executives. The billion-dollar swindle is a story of corruption, greed and carefully curated relationships that the con-artist adeptly manipulates. Ironically, the fraud was used as a financing vehicle for the blockbuster film “The Wolf of Wall Street”, which depicted another story of a financial fraudster, Jordan Belfort. Unlike traditional narratives that assign clear blame to a single nation or leader, Clark presents a nuanced view, emphasizing the interconnectedness of European powers and the incremental, often unintended steps toward conflict. His work delves into the cultural, political, and social dynamics of the time, shedding light on how a mixture of misjudgments, rivalries, and political machinations culminated in catastrophe. Rotella also advises not to be realistic with your dreams and that your goals should be aimed crazy high. I recommend the audio version as Rotella reads it himself. Rotella was just a speaker at Hollow Brook’s 20th anniversary party, along with Olympian McLain Ward, where they discussed some of the topics covered in this book.”

“I love revisiting my favorite books from my childhood with my daughter. In case you forgot about this classic, this is just an adorable story about a stuffed bear at a department store who lost his button and finds a home and a friend. I always include a copy when sending baby gifts to friends and family. “

Uncharted

Margaret Heffernan

“Facing uncertainty is a part of being human that no human enjoys. As financial advisors, we regularly interact with uncertainty. There is uncertainty in the market and uncertainty in clients’ lives. Margaret Heffernan argues that humans could be described as addicted to predictions in order to make sense of the uncertainty of their lives when in reality the world is not determined. There is uncertainty. That’s what opens the door to possibilities.”
